A proposal is the official document that a grant-seeking organization submits to a grant-provider. It explains, in detail, how you will use the money, and why your non-profit deserves this funding more than another. It also lays out the timeline plan for initiating the project proposed.

Do not begin to construct a proposal unless you have reasonable evidence to suggest that your grant provider is prepared to award you the grant.

- indicates he has already earmarked funds for your organization or project
- invites you to submit a proposal
- initiates follow-up conversations and demonstrates enthusiasm for your ideas
- you need to bypass the letter of intent, concept paper, or white paper in lieu of an immanent deadline
- Know the criteria for eligibility
- Review your Funder's Proposal Guidelines
Proposal timeline: 1) Identify a funder. 2) Contact that funder. 3) Conduct a phone interview, after which you will be asked for some form of documentation and then a face-to-face interview. Only after these steps can you begin to actually write a proposal.
